Hi Ash,I think to get a watercolor effect with acrylics you will have to use watercolor paper instead of canvas and you will have to really dilute the paint and have a mist bottle to keep the acrylic paint from drying out on the paper to quickly. As…

Airbrush would be easiest. However, you can try few of these ideas to help it blend better. 1) Use a mister spray bottle to lightly wet your canvas. 2) Add a bit of extender like Floetrol (available in home paints section of Home Depot or other) Don…

Hi Ash, I work with a few different acrylic brands and especially enjoy blending colours. Each brand has their own medium (extender/retarder), which slows up the drying time. Often a very, thin layer of medium painted over the surface allows the pai…

Hi ash, I'm a newbee here. The foreground is good, but it makes all the rocks look like one big layer. Your background rocks need to be a bit paler because of the atmosphere.

Hi Ash,Can you post your work as WIP that way we may be able to help, so hard to do when we are not sitting next to you with brush in hand, I am sort of one of those people that can do but not explain very well, and have not painted many rocks. ... I Just keep overpainting the bit I am not happy with till it looks right,....If you take a sheet of paper and cut a hole in it and place the hole over the bit you are looking at to paint and then the same size paper and hole on your work, this helps you to just focus in on that bit,...I hope you know what I mean and that it is of some help, please post it as a work in progress as you may get more help that way, ......Cheers, Good luck,...Kay.

Hi Ash! Here are a few members you might contact directly regarding your cliff. Thomsi, Kay Shute, Joan, Okeekat, James Wolstencroft. I have picked their acrylic brains many times so hopefully one of them can help. I think I have bugged the heck out of James regarding his skies!!! You could also try going right to Frank Clarke too.
Let me know how you make out and if I come across anything via the internet that can help, I'll let you know.
The joys of acrylics as you say is that if it doesn't work then just gesso it right out and try another tack.

Wow that is a stunning photo! I can see why you want to do it for sure! You don't want to use a painting knife?? If you blocked in the whole cliff with a mottled mix of darks then adding white to that mix for different values and skip a knife across the surface in sort of horizontal strokes you might end up with that look. Then dab on highlights here and there.
Gosh I can't think of what else to help with. There is someone on here who will know. Let me go investigate and I'll come back with a name!!!
Cheers
Arlene

Hi Ash! Here is a detail from the acrylic painting I did of a lighthouse on the cliff by Jerry Yarnell. It was about the 4 acrylic painting I ever did and turned out very bright so I have kept it but never posted it!!! I started blocking in the cliffs and huge rocks with the darkest mix then added the next value and then dry brushed in the lightest and you do have to go over your lights many times to get the desired punch of light! Can you post an example of what you are trying with your cliffs and rocks???

Hi Ash, I usually pour a little of the varnish into an eggcup sized dish and then apply it the way you have mentioned, first coat horizontal and let it dry, the next coat I apply vertically. I usually just turn the painting to light source to check that I have covered the whole painting. If I have any varnish left in the small cup I pour it back into the bottleof varnish, waste not want not.I hope this helps you.

Hi Ash, Windsor & Newton and Daler-Rowney both make varnish suitable for acrylic, you can get either matt or gloss finishes. Most acrylic varnishes clean up with soap and water.
Re zip files- just save your paintings as jpegs on your pc and then they are easy to upload, let me know if your require any more assitance be glad to help you out.

Hi Ash I have used a varnish by Jo Sonja and you wash it out with soap and water. It is a polyurethane satin varnish. If you do a Google search you may find it in your area
