About Me:
73 year old Londoner (11th Feb !937)
Self taught I began adding oil colour to my drawings in my late twenties. After some 43 years of the oil medium I switched to acrylic in 2008, mainly because they allowed me to satisfy my impatience to finish a work in one sitting. My finished oil paintings were very sporadic, my unfinished “put aside for later” paintings, many.
A brief period, 1989 to 1993, saw me dabble in watercolours, which I enjoyed, but the upheaval of a break up in my marriage ended that period and I have never returned to that medium.
This year, 2009, saw me try out various mediums, graphite, watercolour pencils and then, finally, in February, I discovered soft pastels and I suddenly became very prolific and, more importantly, happier with my art.
I realised, many years ago, that I would never be good enough to earn a living from art. If I wasn’t pleased with the results of my work why should others be? I had very few paintings that I could look back upon with any pride. Pastels put fun back in to my art, always a necessary ingredient to me, the need to smile. I started to produce paintings that I was not afraid to exhibit to others.
Since February 2,2009, I have produced nearly all the work on these pages in pastel.
But I am still very much in the learning process………….

equine eyes

Here, finally, is the equine eye blog I promised. As before it is simply a basic for you to add your own
refinements and adjustment.

Figure 1
Basic shape.
The only comment needed here is that the eye slopes down the face slightly more than cats and dogs.

Painting rocks in watercolour

For those watercolour artists who already know this method please bear with me. I was under the impression that all watercolorists knew of it but the response to a recent posting of mine showed differently.
Anyway, enough chat.

Firstly, the method works best on rough paper and applied with virtually no water.

As you probably know, I recently started trying out Wcs again after a long absence and I remembered this technique but not exactly how it worked.
I bought a couple of books, better tha

painting animal eyes

A very popular saying among those of us who paint portraits and animal pictures is “The eyes have it”
Successful pictures always find life through the eye, if that is right then the pic has a chance, if the eye is not correct and alive then neither is the painting.
I have no trouble at all with eyes, for the simple reason that I paint the eye first and if it doesn’t look right then I will not continue until I am satisfied with it. Like most animal artists, I like my animal looking back at me as… Continue

Hi ed, I am enjoying your experiments very much. The card you are talking about is it a type of cardboard used in posters? How did you apply the medium was it with a brush or something else? I am sorry to be nosy and pushy, but I am really into what you are doing. I have to travel a distance to get any art material and want to make sure of what I am looking for before I go on the hike lol. I love your horses and am getting frustrated trying to paint my fancy ones, this last one is trying me, all black and the reference pic is not that clear. Thank you for all your help and lots of luvs ya for it.
